Original Acrylic: "Sealers Bay, Codfish Island"
|
This is a detail
from one of the
recently-completed illustrations for the book 'Taketakerau, The Millennium Tree',
due to launch on 20 December.
The full painting is set in the whaling days, with a group of whalers in the foreground, heating up their trypots for a day's work.
It was the purpose of the painting to draw the contrast between
the pristine quality of the natural setting, and the
intrusion of man. There is in fact an
archaeological record of whaling activity on the very spot where the trypots are standing.
Now that era of our
history is over, nature has returned and you can feel
the bracing quality
of the southern air and hear the hiss of the foam again.
The painting is Acrylic on board. Size 16in x 12in. Artist's Collection.
