Home-Grown Veggies?

Posted by patricia On June - 26 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

pumpkinsWhat could be better for your health and your bank-balance than having your own, fresh home-grown vegetables?  Let me share something with you.

We have a renaissance going on here in New Zealand -   Kiwis are getting back to basics to grow their own vegetables and reduce their living costs.

Where I live, this renaissance is being driven by gardening guru and Northtec horticulture tutor Grant Steven.  Grant has introduced his raised-bed garden concept to schools, communities and marae - not just as a theory but by conducting over 20 workshops that show people how to develop raised beds by rolling up sleeves and actually doing it.

His focus is:

  • Enjoying an all-year-round supply of super-fresh, highly nutritious food;
  • Improving health;
  • Saving money;
  • Growing organically and tasking back control over what is in the food you eat;
  • Making land more productive and attractive;
  • Creating permanent mulch, no dig, no weeding gardens.

Now doesn’t that sound attractive?

Check out what’s being done in New Zealand elsewhere in the world on similar lines, go to the very informative blog at  http://organoponico.com

boeys-cup-art1He’s seated down at a coffee shop, wants to
doodle, has no paper so he grabs a trashed
cup, starts to draw on it, and bingo!  Its the
beginning of a whole line of art-covered foam
cups.  The artist is 31 year old Cheeming Boey of Newport Beach and his cups sell for $120 to $220 at the Marion Meyer Contemporary Art gallery in Laguna Beach.  Coffee anyone?

NO MONKEY BUSINESS FOR LA HABRA MAN

Posted by kallen On June - 6 - 20093 COMMENTS

capuchin-monkey-00021 Craig Cook, 43, a quadriplegic due to an auto accident, formerly had to pay caregivers or rely on family or neighbors for help. But now he says, “I have independence” and the reason is a monkey named Minnie. When Cook calls out, Minnie springs into action, like,when popcorn is needed to go with a DVD movie. Minnie gets the box down, opens the microwave, inserts the popcorn, closes the door, etc. Minnie is a wonderful help and pet companion.
